The use of honey dates back to ancient times, with caves dating back eight thousand years showing paintings of men harvesting honey. History shows that honey has been used in food and drinks, as medicine, and as part of sacred rites by many cultures around the world. In modern times, honey is sometimes still collected from wild bee colonies, but most of the global production comes from domestic beehives. The top five producers alone—China, Turkey, Argentina, Ukraine, and the United States—harvest 1.2 million metric tons of natural honey each year.
