This statistic shows the share of agricultural land by crop dedicated to genetically modified organisms in the United States in 2017 and 2018. In 2018, 80 percent of the area devoted to corn cultivation in the United States was covered with genetically modified corn with stacked traits, and 10 percent of the area was occupied by herbicide-resistant corn. A genetically modified organism (GMO) is an organism whose genetic material has been modified to give it a new characteristic. "Gene stacking" thus involves adding genes to the naturally existing genes.
