Survey methodology:
These figures are extrapolated from the survey conducted by INSERM and CIASE. CIASE launched a call for testimonies in 2019 and partnered with the national federation of victim associations France Victimes to handle the collection of accounts. The Inserm team worked on producing the questionnaire, and IFOP was their partner for programming and managing the database.
Sample: a survey on sexual violence in the general population, conducted between November 25, 2020, and January 28, 2021, with a quota sample of 28,010 people over 18 interviewed online. This survey made it possible to estimate the prevalence of sexual violence perpetrated by a member of the Catholic clergy, compare it to violence committed in other socialization spheres (family, school, sports activities, other religions, etc.), and finally assess the social and demographic specificity of the so-called "Call for Testimonies" survey.

Citation formats

The family environment was the place where the most child sexual abuse was recorded in 2021. According to estimates from the survey on sexual violence against minors in the Catholic Church, religious activities were the fifth social circle where children were most exposed to sexual violence. The CIASE and INSERM then estimated that more than 1.2 percent of people had been abused before the age of 18, including 0.82 percent by direct members of the clergy such as a priest, a religious brother or sister, or a deacon.
