* The PCS classification was defined by the Ministry of National Education and distinguishes four groups according to the job titles of the parents:
- Group A: Highly favored PCS includes: business owners with 10 or more employees; liberal professions; public service executives; professors, scientific professions; information, arts, and entertainment professions; administrative and commercial executives of companies; engineers and technical executives of companies; primary school teachers and equivalents; former executives and intermediate professions;
- Group B: Favored PCS includes: intermediate professions in health and social work; clergy, religious; intermediate administrative professions in the public service; intermediate administrative and commercial professions of companies; technicians; foremen, supervisors;
- Group C: Average PCS includes: farmer-operators; artisans; merchants and equivalents; civil employees and service agents of the public service; police officers and military; administrative employees of companies; commercial employees; personnel in direct services to individuals; former farmer-operators; former artisans, merchants, business owners;
- Group D: Disadvantaged PCS includes: skilled workers; unskilled workers; agricultural workers; former employees and workers; unemployed persons who have never worked; various inactive persons (other than retirees).

Citation formats

The social origin of students enrolled in a "Grandes écoles" program for the **** academic year was very unequal in France. While the middle and disadvantaged classes represented the majority of the French population, they were in the minority here. Students whose parents' professions and socio-professional categories (PCS) were highly privileged represented a large majority of the student body in the grandes écoles that year. The highest proportion was reached by students at the Écoles Normales Supérieures (ENS), where the PCS of their parents were highly privileged, representing ** percent of the students.
