This statistic illustrates the number of Earth planets needed if the global population lived like the inhabitants of different countries in 2022. That year, if Earthlings lived like the inhabitants of Qatar, nine Earth planets would be required to meet our needs. By comparison, the current global population would consume 1.75 Earth planets in 2022.

In 2022, Earth Overshoot Day falls even earlier

The date of July 28, 2022, corresponds to the day from which humanity has consumed all the resources that the Earth can regenerate in one year (that is, its biocapacity). To regenerate what humanity consumes today, we would therefore need the equivalent of 1.75 Earths in terms of capacity. From this day on, we will begin to use the natural capital necessary to sustain life on Earth for five months. Europe and France have a particularly unsustainable lifestyle; if all humanity lived like the French, Earth Overshoot Day would have occurred much earlier, on May 5, 2022, and the population would have needed 2.8 planets. One of the main causes of the advancement of Earth Overshoot Day over the years is our current agricultural model that overexploits natural resources. Indeed, through deforestation and land clearing for agriculture and grazing, the digestion of cattle and sheep, the production and use of fertilizers and livestock effluents for crops, and the use of energy to operate agricultural equipment, agriculture is responsible for one-fifth of CO2 emissions.

It is urgent for each country to reduce its carbon footprint

The carbon footprint corresponds to the areas needed to renew the resources consumed. Globally, carbon currently represents 60 percent of the ecological footprint even though it is the main cause of global warming caused by human activity. One of the challenges of the COP26, which took place in November 2021 in Glasgow, was to define the different deadlines that countries must meet to reduce their greenhouse gas emissions and limit global warming to +1.5 °C before 2050. To achieve this, the United Nations Environment Programme estimates that it will be necessary to reduce global CO2 emissions by 7.6 percent per year by 2030.
