The source adds the following information: "This indicator is defined as the number of organizations and sites that have adopted the EMAS standard. Eco-Management and Audit Scheme (EMAS) is a voluntary environmental management system implemented by companies and other organizations from all sectors of economic activity, including local authorities, to assess, report on, or improve their environmental performance. EMAS certification incorporates the ISO 14001 standard (International Standard for an environmental management system) as its environmental management system component. Since April 2001, company registration has been possible, allowing these companies to register all their sites under a single registration number. The European Commission began collecting the number of sites in addition to the number of organizations in March 2004 to provide a more accurate picture of EMAS development."
