Disparities in housing access conditions within the European Union are significant. Homeownership is much more common in Eastern Europe. Thus, in 2020, ** percent of the Romanian population owned their homes, and only * percent had a loan or mortgage. Croatians also owned their homes at over ** percent, as did Bulgarians at **** percent.
However, homeownership is not necessarily a sign of wealth. Eastern European countries are the poorest countries in the European Union. Southern Europe is also predominantly homeowners, with about ** percent of Spaniards and ** percent of Portuguese owning their homes. This tradition of homeownership explains the dynamism of the construction and real estate sector.
Conversely, Northern European countries had indebted homeowners, with **** percent in Norway and **** percent in the Netherlands. Germany was the country with the fewest homeowners in Europe. France, for its part, was below the European average with **** percent of homeowners without credit and **** percent of homeowners with an ongoing loan.
