Homeownership in France

The proportion of French people who were owners of their primary residence in 2018 was over 65 percent. Thus, it is observed that between 2008 and 2018, the share of the French population who became homeowners increased by three points. Indeed, considering the number of first-time buyers, that is, those who acquire property ownership for the first time, it is observed that over recent years, this figure has gradually grown: from 367,000 people who bought a home for the first time in 2012, it rose to nearly 600,000 in 2017.

Reasons and obstacles to becoming, or not becoming, a homeowner in France

The residential real estate sector has been growing steadily since 2014, with the number of homes sold nationwide increasing. Among the reasons motivating French people to buy property in 2018 were no longer having to pay rent (47 percent) and feeling like they truly own their home (44 percent). Conversely, those who did not want to buy a home stated that this choice was due to the high prices of the real estate market (56 percent) or the costs related to acquisition (36 percent).
