History and Services of Waste Management Inc.
Waste Management Inc. is a comprehensive waste management and environmental services company founded in 1971. Initially, the three founders aggressively acquired numerous waste collection services, and by 1972, they had acquired more than 133 in 19 states as well as in Ontario and Quebec. When the company purchased the Service Corporation of America in 1980, Waste Management became one of the largest waste collection companies in the United States. The company is currently active in the United States, Canada, and Puerto Rico.
Waste Management is now one of the largest waste management companies in the world although it is surpassed by the French companies Veolia Environment and Suez Environment, whose revenues reached 29.03 billion U.S. dollars and 17.41 billion U.S. dollars respectively in 2014. Waste Management increased its operating income to nearly 14 billion U.S. dollars that same year.
Waste Management also owns and operates various waste-to-energy activities and produces energy from landfill gas where methane and carbon dioxide emitted during the decomposition of buried organic waste are collected to generate electricity. The company spent more than 1.4 billion U.S. dollars on selling, general, and administrative expenses during fiscal year 2014. The company also provides a bulk recycling system where recycled materials do not need to be separated by consumers, which can often increase the recycling rate.
