Infant Mortality
Infant mortality rates are often used as an indicator of a nation's health and well-being. Monaco, Iceland, and Japan are the three countries with the lowest infant mortality rates, with about 2 infant deaths per 1,000 infants during their first year of life. In general, countries with the lowest infant mortality rates also have the highest average life expectancy calculated. Additionally, countries with the highest density of physicians and doctors generally also have a low infant mortality rate.
However, many different factors contribute to varying rates, such as a country's overall income, health expenditures per capita, mothers' education levels, environmental conditions, and medical infrastructure. These factors contribute to many variations regarding the level of childbirth and child care. The countries with the highest infant mortality rates include Afghanistan, Mali, and Somalia. These countries have about 100 deaths per 1,000 infants during their first year of life. While the reasons for a high infant mortality rate are numerous, the leading causes of juvenile death before the age of five worldwide are pneumonia, diarrhea, and prematurity.
