In sub-Saharan Africa the neonatal mortality rate fell from 46 per 1,000 live births in 1990 to 26 deaths per 1,000 live births in 2023. Despite this fall, sub-Saharan Africa recorded the highest mortality rate, with Southern Asia reporting the next highest neonatal mortality rate.
