World population and most populous countries

There are about 8 billion people in the world today, a figure that highlights the dramatic increase in population since the beginning of the industrial revolution. Since the 1950s, the world population has also at least doubled. It is estimated that the world population will reach around 9.75 billion people by 2050.

Regarding the number of inhabitants, the Asian continent is by far the leader. In mid-2022, more than 4.73 billion people lived in Asia alone, representing more than half of the world population. As with other regions of the world (except Europe), the majority of the Asian population is under 15 years old. Since 2022, about 8 percent of the world population is aged 64 years or older. In the same year, the most populous countries in the world were China, followed by India, two countries located on the Asian continent and two countries with about four times more inhabitants than the third country: the United States. It is estimated that the total population of the most populous country, China, was about 1.411 billion in 2014. Not only is China’s total population continuously increasing, but the median age has also risen rapidly over the past six decades. It is estimated that, thanks to improved healthcare services and living conditions, the median age in China in 2025 will be 40 years, meaning that half of the Chinese population will be younger and the other half older.

It is interesting to note that the 20 countries with the highest population growth rate in 2014 were mainly countries on the African continent. This growth is due to the lack of contraception and the decline in infant mortality. The populations of Asia and Africa are expected to increase rapidly over the next 100 years. The African population is expected to exceed 4.1 billion people by 2100. With these two continents leading humanity’s demographic development, global population growth is extremely rapid.
