The automotive industry is one of the driving forces of the German economy, and 2024 proved it once again. In fact, the German market was the European power that registered the highest number of passenger cars registered during that year. But the influence of German cars is not limited to its borders. In 2024, the Volkswagen group sold approximately ** vehicles worldwide. This placed it in second place in the global ranking of manufacturers, which was led by the Toyota Group on this occasion. Hyundai-Kia completed the podium. 

The global automotive industry in figures

Year after year, China not only establishes itself as the largest automotive producer in the world, but also manages to maintain a significant margin over the other powers. Not only that, it is the only major power that, after a bleak 2020, has not only returned to the growing trend of its passenger car sales but has also managed to surpass the 2019 figure, that is, before the pandemic began. However, this story did not repeat itself in the case of the United States. The U.S. market not only failed to stop the decline in 2022 but recorded the lowest sales volume in the last 15 years. That said, the situation changed in 2023, when it finally returned to the growth path.

Electrified vehicles continue gaining ground

The growing environmental awareness of the population seems to have driven the sales of electrified vehicles worldwide in recent years. That said, China and the United States continue to be the main markets for this type of car globally, at a significant distance from the rest of the countries. This reality is not surprising considering that BYD and Tesla, two of the largest pure electric car manufacturers, are headquartered precisely in those countries.
