The expansion of this synthetic material seems unstoppable, and short- and medium-term demand projections reveal sustained growth over the coming decades, especially in the Asian continent, which will continue to be its largest user.

Leader in both demand and supply

But Asia not only leads in demand but also in supply. China stands out again, currently holding 32 percent of the production share, nearly doubling the figure of the North American bloc. Its rapidly growing economy, low labor costs, and easy access to raw materials make this nation an attractive place for investment and production of these types of polymers.

Waste trade, the other major business line

That said, European countries lead in plastic waste trade, especially after China banned the import of this type of waste in 2018 to avoid becoming the world’s dumping ground, a fate that is happening to other places in this geographic area. The Netherlands shines in this area, as it is not only the world’s largest importer with nearly ** tons received but also ranks fourth in exports. The same pattern is repeated with Germany but in reverse, as it leads the export list and is also fourth in import volume.
