Although telecommuting has been slowly making its way into Spanish society, more than ** percent of the population still always works outside the home; a percentage that approaches ** percent if those who do so mostly are taken into account. Among the main reasons why this option has not fully taken hold are primarily the lack of willingness and/or technological resources on the part of companies to start operating remotely.

Profile of the telecommuter

It is a fact that not everyone can enjoy this privilege. But who benefits the most? Both the gender differences (almost *** percentage points in favor of women) and the age differences are notable. Although younger generations have the best relationship with new technologies, they are not the ones who enjoy them the most in the workplace, as only *** percent of workers under ** had this option, compared to **** percent of those between ** and ** (the most benefited). Employees over 54 years old are the other major marginalized group, with a percentage below ** percent.

Is Spain at the European level?

From an international perspective, Spain ranks at the bottom within the Old Continent. Specifically, it is behind its neighboring countries, France and Portugal, whose penetration rates are **** percent and *** percent, respectively, and at a vast distance from Finland: no less than **** percentage points. However, if the European average is considered, the negative difference of the Mediterranean state is reduced to approximately two points.
