Registrations experienced a growing trend in Spain between 2012 and 2018, exceeding * cars registered by more than ** units at the end of that period. However, in 2019, the number of registrations in the domestic market decreased compared to the previous year, mirroring the situation that the national automotive industry has been experiencing since 2017 in terms of production. This decline only worsened in 2020 as a result of the crisis caused by the COVID-19 pandemic. That said, just one year later, around ** passenger cars and SUVs were registered in Spain, representing a slight increase. But what seemed to be the hope for the start of a necessary recovery for the sector remained just that, at least in 2022, as it again showed a downward trend, even reaching a worse figure than in 2020. In 2023, however, it marked the return of a positive spirit with an increase in registrations of almost ** percent compared to the previous year, which was confirmed in 2024, surpassing the * ³¾²¹°ù°ì.Ìý

The Spanish automotive industry in figures

The automotive sector is one of the engines of the Spanish economy, especially in regions such as Aragón or Catalonia. Plants like Opel Spain in Figueruelas (Zaragoza) or Seat in Martorell (Barcelona) generate a large part of the employment in these autonomous communities. Even so, and despite the annual turnover exceeding ** million euros in 2023, the national automotive production has generally declined since 2017. Moreover, after the upward trend in 2022 and 2023, a new drop was recorded in 2024. In fact, factories closed with production below * units, that is, almost * vehicles fewer than in 2023. 

Alternative vehicles continue to rise

Since their introduction to the Spanish market in 2011, vehicles with alternative technologies have only gained presence year after year. Thus, although their share remains small compared to traditional engines, in 2024 they already accounted for more than ** percent of total registrations. Within this type of vehicle, gasoline hybrids are the most popular among the population, specifically the models offered by Toyota. In fact, the Toyota Corolla was the most registered hybrid in Spain in 2024, followed by another model from the Japanese manufacturer.
