Latin America and the Caribbean: ranking of countries below the poverty line in 2023
In 2023, only three of the ** selected countries in Latin America had a percentage lower than ** percent of their population below the poverty line: Jamaica, Uruguay, and Chile. Meanwhile, countries like Honduras, Haiti, and Guatemala recorded figures above ** percent, which has made poverty a crucial problem in Latin America.
Poverty in Mexico
As a result of the COVID-19 pandemic, two of the pillars of the Mexican economy were strongly affected: manufacturing and tourism. The number of cases and restrictions caused a complete halt in both sectors. However, this is not the underlying problem. Economic policies in recent years have not fully worked in the country, and even the minimum wage was one of the lowest in the region before registering a considerable increase between 2019 and 2021, rising from *** to *** Mexican pesos.
Chile, the regional example
Chile has become one of the examples to follow within Latin America. Besides being among the countries with the lowest poverty levels in the region, it is the second South American country with the highest gross domestic product (GDP) per capita. Internal policies and the composition of Chile's GDP have allowed it not to suffer the economic consequences of the pandemic as severely, despite being one of the countries with the highest incidence of cases. However, there are still strong differences that have caused various social uprisings and have led to a radical change in the country's politics since the 2021 elections.
