The risk premium (also, country risk) is the surcharge that investors demand for buying public debt in one country compared to another country, whose price is used as a benchmark because it is considered safer debt. In the case of Spain and the rest of the European Union countries, the German bond is taken as a reference. Thus, the risk premium is calculated by subtracting the interest paid in the secondary markets for Spanish ten-year bonds from the interest paid for German bonds.
