Walmart de México y Centroamérica —a subsidiary of the supermarket chain Walmart— had a total of stores in Mexico in 2023. The discount stores known as Bodega Aurrerá were the most common type of Walmex branches in the country, representing around ** percent of the total. Meanwhile, the Superama stores, aimed at middle and upper social classes, successfully completed their transformation process into a new format known as Walmart Express. Thus, a total of *** establishments of this latter type were counted in the Mexican territory by the end of the referenced year.

Leader in Mexico

The first Walmart store in Mexico was a Sam’s Club, which opened in Mexico City in 1991. Since then, the supermarket chain has been consolidating its position in the national market until becoming one of the companies with the highest revenue volume and brand value in the country. Not surprisingly, Walmex, which handles Walmart’s commercial operations in Mexico and Central America, is the brand’s largest division outside the United States, as it accounts for nearly ** percent of the international Walmart stores.

An international giant

Walmart is the largest multinational corporation of supermarkets and discount stores in the world. The company began its journey with a store in 1962 in Rogers, Arkansas (United States), where it is currently headquartered.
