Citation formats

One of Spain's most deeply rooted traditions, bullfighting, could have its days numbered in the medium and long term. More than two-fifths of the population were against bullfighting and called for the prohibition of bullfighting events as of August 2023.

A conservative passion

Voters of right-wing parties are much more receptive and tolerant of this type of celebration than those on the left. In fact, more than ** percent of Popular Party voters and ** percent of Vox voters declare themselves in favor of bullfighting, compared to *** percent recorded among PSOE voters.

Adding insult to injury

In addition to the decline in public support, COVID-19 also took a toll on the sector. The impact was felt not only in the number of bullfighting events held during 2020 and 2021 (especially in the case of bullfights) or in the number of bullfighters, but also among breeders, who have seen the number of fighting bulls registered drop significantly compared to 2018. However, the number of companies registered in the General Registry of Fighting Bull Breeding Companies in Spain paradoxically experienced the opposite trend, reaching values in 2020 and 2021 higher than those of 2012.
