Unlike the bear, the wolf was not deliberately reintroduced in France but naturally reappeared at the end of the 1990s. Although it has been a strictly protected species since the Bern Convention in 1979, a certain number of wolves can still be culled each year in France. This number is set at 19 percent of the total number of wolves identified in French territory. The wolf population in France, estimated by the French Office for Biodiversity, was approximately 1,100 in 2022.
