April 2024
United Kingdom
2007 to 2023
This statistic has been compiled by ÌÇÐÄÆƽâ°æ using various sources. Figures are estimates and have been rounded; they should be interpreted with caution.
Market share refers to the respective shares of the market held by each of the nine designated institutions in comparison with each other only. The market shares have not been calculated based on the entire UK market. The source uses data reported by designated institutions on their total numbers of personal current accounts and basic bank accounts to calculate market shares and compare them.Â
Figures for 2018 to 2023 have been rounded to the nearest five percentage points (or to one percentage point where the rounded value would otherwise be zero) due to the commercial sensitivity of personal current account market share data. Figures for 2014 were provided as a range; the upper end of the range was used. Figures for 2016 and 2017 were also only available as ranges; in these cases, values have been rounded up within the given range to the nearest 2.5 percentage points.
Notes on brand changes:Â
- NatWest Group was known as the Royal Bank of Scotland Group (RBS) until its rebranding in July 2020.
- Virgin Money was previously CYBG PLC, which rebranded as Virgin Money UK PLC in October 2019.
- In 2007, what is now Lloyds Banking Group consisted of Lloyds TSB and Halifax Bank of Scotland (HBOS). At that time: Lloyds TSB held approximately 19 percent market share. Halifax Bank of Scotland (HBOS) held approximately 14 percent market share.
- Santander UK was formed from the acquisitions of Abbey (which had about six percent market share in 2007) and Alliance & Leicester (about three percent market share in 2007).
- TSB became a separate entity from Lloyds Banking Group in 2013, following a regulatory-mandated demerger. Prior to that, TSB had been part of Lloyds TSB since their merger in 1995
