Forest area refers to land that is under natural or planted stands of trees of at least five meters in situ, whether productive or not, and excludes tree stands in agricultural production systems (such as in fruit plantations and agroforestry systems), and trees in urban parks and gardens.
As of 2022, some percent of the total land in the United States was forested. Over recent decades, the forested share of U.S. land increased slightly, from a low of percent in 1990.
