The study surveyed 115 hospitals, 88 of which offered online diagnostic services. The 115 hospitals were located in 28 provinces. 36 surveyed institutions were located in eastern China, 28 in northern China, 16 in northeastern China, 12 in central China, nine in northeastern China, eight in southeastern China, and six in southwestern China.
87.83 percent of all hospitals surveyed were tier three hospitals. All but ten hospitals were publicly owned.
According to the “Regulation on hospital classifications", Chinese hospitals are divided into three tiers. A tier one hospital is a community hospital or clinic that is responsible for providing primary medical services and care. A tier two hospital is a regional hospital that provides comprehensive medical and health services to several communities and performs certain teaching and scientific research tasks. A tier three hospital is an institution that provides high-level specialized medical and health services to several regions and performs higher teaching and research tasks.

Breakdown of access methods to online diagnostic services in China 2022-2023
A survey of *** hospitals across China in 2022 and 2023 found that three-quarters of Chinese hospitals already offered online diagnosis and treatment services. Among these hospitals, more than ** percent offered their online services through their own platforms. Less than eight percent of all institutions engaged in online services through both their own platforms and third-party service providers.
