To file for an IP right, applicants have to name at least one contracting state. Representation is obligatory for applicants who are not resident or whose main place of business is not located in a contracting state.

As of 2023, Kenya and Ghana counted the highest number of contracting state designations for patents as part of the intellectual property (IP) applications received by the African Regional Intellectual Property Organization (ARIPO). This amounted to *** and *** designations, respectively. That year, the majority of IP applications received concerned patent rights.
