Roland Berger assessed the impact of GenAI on industries in a bottom up approach based on its long-term industry cost data, input from over 100 global industry experts, and the analysis of academic research.Â
The research was conducted following these steps:
Analyzed nearly 800 job types across different industries using generative language and image models.
Assessed impact across 11 enterprise operational areas.
Calculated industry impact by analyzing cost proportions in different functions.
Developed language and image model industry impact indices.
 Estimated cost reduction through efficiency improvements.
The conductors also emphasize that the analysis is limited because it is difficult to distinguish between AI's assistive and replacement roles. In addition, the operational costs in each industry are constantly changing.

According to estimates made in 2023, the professional service industry in China would save around *** billion yuan throughout the industry when using generative AI, which accounts for an ** percent cost reduction. While industries, such as materials, that do not rely so much on digital infrastructure have fewer relative savings, due to their overall size, the absolute cost savings are still significant.
