The figures on display cover "network volume". This represents the total of two other categories: "Billed Business" and "Processed Volume":

Billed business represents transaction volumes on payment products issued by American Express. This was different in past releases, when billed business represented the total transaction volume. The source changed its wording in 2021, possibly to better reflect the <em>proprietary</em> nature of this specific category - changing the total into "Network volume";
Processed volumes represent transaction volumes on cards issued under network partnership agreements with banks and other institutions, including joint ventures, as well as alternative payment solutions facilitated by American Express. In releases before 2021, this category was referred to as <em>Global Network Services (GNS)</em>.

Citation formats

The total payment volume on the American Express network had grown by **** percent in the third quarter of 2024 compared to the same quarter one year before. These figures include transactions from cards issued by Amex itself, as well as those from third parties that are allowed to operate on American Express' network. These partnerships account for roughly ** percent of the overall network volume. The year-on-year growth rate on display for all transactions in the third quarter was an increase when compared to the figure for Q2 2024.
