Lithuania's electric vehicle charging infrastructure has grown since 2020, with over charging points operational by the third quarter of 2024. This expansion highlights an increasing demand for electric vehicles. The network's composition, featuring a majority of alternating current chargers, provides insights into the evolving landscape of EV charging in the Baltic nation.
Expansion of fast charging options
The Lithuanian charging network has seen a significant shift towards faster charging solutions. Between 2022 and 2023, the number of fast direct current charging points surged to *** units, making DC chargers the most prevalent type in the country. This rapid growth in fast charging infrastructure indicates a shifting focus on addressing the needs of EV drivers who require quick charging options for longer journeys. The availability of ** Level 1 chargers further complements the network, offering a range of charging speeds to suit various user needs.Â
Dominance of medium-speed AC chargers
While DC chargers have seen rapid growth, alternating current charging points still form the backbone of Lithuania's EV charging infrastructure. Since 2022, triple-phase medium-speed AC chargers, with power outputs between *** and ** kilowatts, have become the most common type. In 2023, these medium-speed chargers accounted for *** charging points, significantly outnumbering the *** fast AC charging points. This prevalence of medium-speed chargers suggests a focus on providing widespread, accessible charging options for everyday use, complementing the fast-charging network for longer trips.
