The global Ocean Health Index is a tool for evaluating the health of oceans for 220 coastal countries and territories, and it has been conducted annually since 2012. This index measures our sustainable management of ten categories of benefits that people seek from the ocean. These categories include opportunities for artisanal fishing, biodiversity, carbon storage, clean waters, coastal economies and livelihoods, coastal protection, food supply, natural products, a sense of place, and tourism and recreation.Â
Each category score ranges from 0 to 100, and the average of these scores provides an overall index score for each country or territory.
