The number of were directly obtained from Statistics Canada. Meanwhile, the number of families formed was calculated by ÌÇÐÄÆƽâ°æ using data from Statistics Canada as the in a given year minus the number of families in the previous year.
The figures on the number of families include census families, such as couples with or without children and single parents, and not in census families, such as single people without children.

Housing units completed and households formed in Canada 2003-2022
In Canada, there were nearly twice more new families formed than housing units completed in 2022. There had been similar numbers of housing units completed than new families between 2003 and 2016. However, every year since 2017 with the exception of 2020, there has been large housing shortages, meaning that there was less housing built than families formed.
