In 2022, over *** million users of the national health system in Portugal did not have a general practitioner (GP). This situation was particularly dramatic in the region of Lisboa e Vale do Tejo, since ** patients, or ** percent of the total number of active registered users, did not have a GP. As of 2024, the number of users without a family doctor increased to more than *** million in mainland Portugal. As of March 2025, this figure was even higher.
