As of February 2024, compact petrol sport-utility vehicles had the most expensive cost of ownership of the car types surveyed for companies based in Germany, despite having an on average lower base price compared to compact plug-in hybrid electric and battery-electric SUVs. This higher ownership cost was due to a higher tax burden over four years, as the cost of the energy tax and benefit-in-kind tax were the highest for compact petrol SUVs.Â
