Perfluoroalkyl and polyfluoroalkyl substances (PFAS) are frequently used in products marketed as stain- or water-resistant. A recent study examined the PFAS concentration in selected products and found that 72 percent of those marketed as stain- or water-resistant contained PFAS. In contrast, the study reported that none of the products not labeled as stain- or water-resistant contained PFAS.
PFAS have been linked to significant adverse health impacts in both humans and animals and as such, the ubiquitous global use of PFAS chemicals, and their potential contamination within the environment and living organisms, poses a significant environmental and public health challenge.
