Through 2016 to 2020, the largest number of vehicle units sold was by the Scania and MAN divisions of the Traton Group. In 2019, MAN SE reported about *** thousand vehicles sold and Scania reported about **** thousand units. Volkswagen Truck and bus sold about ** thousand units. Vehicle sales dropped in 2020 and was followed by a period of rapid growth through 2021 up until 2024. This was significantly influenced by the acquisition of Navistar in 2021 (rewith Navistar, Scania, and MAN selling ** to ** thousand units each.
The brief period of decline in total vehicle sales was in the midst of both the COVID-19 pandemic and global semiconductor shortages. It was not only the Traton Group that suffered such losses as the number of cars sold worldwide suffered a decline during that same period.
