In 2025, the Nobel Peace Prize was awarded to Venezuelan opposition leader María Corina Machado. A majority of the winners are men, and it has been awarded to organizations on ** occasions.

Controversies and criticism

Though highly prestigious, the Nobel Peace Prize has received criticism for being political and for being Western-leaning. It has also been criticized for being awarded based on hopes of future changes rather than actual changes made. Specific prize awards have also been controversial, including those granted to Ethiopian Prime Minister Abiy Ahmed in 2019, U.S. President Barack Obama in 2009, Rabin, Peres and Arafat in 1994, and Kissinger and Lê Đức Thọ in 1973.
