In a survey conducted in Japan between *** and **, the majority of respondents expressed the opinion that women should continue working even after having children. While **** percent thought that women should continue working even after childbirth, **** percent stated that women should temporarily quit their jobs to raise children and resume working after they have grown up.
Although Japan's female labor participation rate has risen in the past decades, women are more likely than men to be in non-regular employment. This is partly due to the practice of quitting jobs upon childbirth, which results in many women dropping out of the regular workforce.
