China has by far the world's largest production capacity of titanium sponge. In 2025, the East Asian country's titanium sponge production capacity was an estimated 320,000 metric tons. Japan was in a distant second place that year, with a production capacity of an estimated 65,200 metric tons. 

Titanium sponge is a porous form of pure titanium which has been reduced from titanium ore. Titanium sponge must then be melted or combined in an alloy to form an ingot which can be further processed into general titanium products.
