The 2021 YRBS sampling frame consisted of all regular public schools (including charter schools), parochial schools, and other private schools with students in at least one of grades 9–12 in the 50 U.S. states and the District of Columbia.

In the 12 months leading up to a 2021 survey, around 22.2 percent of American high school students had seriously considered a suicide attempt. The prevalence of suicidal ideation was highest among bisexual students, at 50.2 percent.
