Sugar export

Sugar was one of the leading agricultural products exported from India. Over *** billion Indian rupees worth of sugar was exported from the country in 2022. However, the government imposed restrictions on sugar exports from the country as of June 2022. The step was taken to maintain the price stability of sugar and to guarantee enough supply for domestic consumption.

Sugar consumption

India ranks first as the leading sugar consumer globally. A majority of Indian cuisines contain sugar. Especially during the festive season, the celebration in the country is incomplete without sweets or mithai as known in the Hindi language. Most Indian sweets along with sugar contain nuts, flour, and dairy components such as milk, butter, and cream. As a result of increased consumption and demand, the market value of sweets is likely to reach *** billion Indian rupees in 2025.
