A ship usually calls in ports in different countries or regions during its voyage, leading to a major overlap. Shares for individual countries can thus not be substracted from the totals shown in the graph. For example: a share for China cannot be found by substracting EU's share (42 percent) from the combined EU and China's share (80 percent).

Although a ship usually docks in several ports located in different countries or regions during its journey, the maritime trade hubs of China and the EU drew the most traffic in 2019. Importance of regional legislation

The distribution of ships calling at ports in specific regions demonstrates the power of regional legislation applicable to all ships calling in local ports. If certain laws were passed in China and the EU, about ** percent of the global ship traffic would have to abide by these laws while in Chinese and EU waters. Especially in terms of environmental protection, regional regulation could have a far-reaching impact. It would not be needed to convince the largest ship owning countries to get on board and pass laws and regulations on maritime sustainability, since a large share of the world ship fleet would already need to comply by regional legislation.
