In 2024, there were more than * electric vehicles (EVs) sold in Malaysia, an increase of around units compared to the number of electric vehicles sold in the previous year. The sales of EVs in the country experienced a significant increase from 2021 to 2024.

 The EV ecosystem in Malaysia

Environmentally friendly vehicles continue to gain popularity among consumers in Malaysia. And the market is currently led by two major brands, BYD and Proton. Both the Chinese and Malaysian automotive manufacturers produce EVs with competitive pricing and typically long battery life, both are important factors in the consumers' decisions to purchase electric vehicles. Although charging infrastructure is also a main factor, there is still a scarcity of charging units, particularly in critical areas like the highway. As of March 2025, Malaysia had approximately AC and DC charging stations.

Government incentives to encourage EV adoption

To achieve net-zero emissions by 2050, the adoption of EV in Malaysia became a key component. The government aims for EVs to comprise 15% of the total industrial volume (TIV) by 2030 and 80% by 2050. Several incentives have been implemented to encourage a greater number of consumers to purchase EVs. EV owners are exempted from road tax starting January 2022 until December 2025 and will have a lower tax rate in 2026 onwards, based on the power output of each EV.
