Electric vehicle market in Malaysia - statistics & facts
Gasoline-powered vehicles are one of the biggest emitters of CO2, and Malaysian consumers are known to favor their cars over public transportation. In a 2023 survey, around 53 percent of respondents preferred to travel with private automobiles. Nevertheless, with more environmental awareness and the looming threat of climate change, many car owners in Malaysia now opt for electric vehicles (EVs) to reduce their carbon footprint. The sales of EVs in the country surged by over 5,000 percent from 2021 to 2024. Meanwhile, hybrid EV sales are also steadily increasing, with a record high of more than 30,000 units sold in 2024.
