In 2022, over 45 percent of the lithium-ion battery projects in North America, South America, and Central America combined used lithium-nickel-manganese-cobalt-oxide (NMC) batteries. NMC batteries are the most used batteries worldwide. Lithium-phosphate (LFP) batteries followed at 36 percent.
In 2021, China had by far the largest lithium-ion battery manufacturing capacity worldwide, at almost 80 percent of the market. The United States ranked second, though only accounting for six percent of the global manufacturing capacity.
