The United States was by far the largest exporter of plastic waste to Malaysia in 2023, with shipments amounting to over 100,000 metric tons. Germany was ranked second that year, having exported around 50,000 metric tons of plastic waste. Malaysia was one of the largest importers of plastic waste in 2023, receiving shipments of more than 405 thousand metric tons from around the world. Such large volumes of waste create numerous problems for Malaysia's waste management system.
