During the International Coastal Ocean Cleanup day in 2023, thousands of people in Europe volunteered to collect waste from coastlines. Mediterranean countries such as Spain or Germany featured large numbers of litter items found along their coastlines that year. The most commonly found waste item across Europe was cigarette butts. Meanwhile, in the UK and Ireland, food wrappers accounted for the highest number of items collected.
