Import tariffs on solar modules from Cambodia, Malaysia, Thailand, and Vietnam - as a result of Auxin Solar's petition - could slash solar PV capacity deployments in the U.S. by half in 2022 and 2023, compared to a baseline scenario. Until 2025, this would result in new deployment losses of roughly ** gigawatts. Even without the imposition of such tariffs, the U.S. was not on track to meet the deployment capacity required to reach President Joe Biden's climate targets.
In September 2022, President Biden announced a moratorium on new import tariffs for a 24-month period. Nevertheless, the Department of Commerce reported it would continue its investigation based on the petition filed by Auxin Solar.
