The consumer price index is compiled monthly by the Statistics Bureau, Ministry of Internal Affairs and Communications. The purpose of consumer price indexes is to measure price changes in various goods and services purchased by households, leveling their prices in the base year at 100 points and keeping their weight in the 'basket' constant over time. A retail price survey feeds the index, regularly tracking the latest prices in each municipality.
