Prior to the Russian invasion of Ukraine in 2022, McDonald's in Russia was operated by the U.S. company and three domestic franchises. In 2020, their total revenue amounted to billion Russian rubles. The Russian and Ukrainian markets combined accounted for nine percent of the U.S. company's global revenue in 2021. The first McDonald's restaurant in Russia was opened in 1990.

Withdrawal of McDonald's from Russia

In March 2022, the company exited the Russian market over the war in Ukraine that began one month prior. It sold all restaurants to Alexander Govor, a Russian oil (and previously coal) businessman, a co-founder of NefteKhimService. Prior to the U.S. company's withdrawal from Russia, Govor owned ** franchise McDonald's restaurants in Siberia. In December 2022, *** former McDonald's restaurants in Russia reopened under a new name "Vkusno i Tochka." Additionally, ** new restaurants were planned to be opened in 2023.
