Domestic scheme BankAxept returned to the top of the digital payments market in Norway in 2024, after Visa and Mastercard took over in 2020. That change was somewhat unexpected, and the source does not explain why this came about as the market share of credit cards and debit cards for offline, in-store payments remained relatively unchanged in 2020. BankAxept is the country's national payment system, and first came about in 1990 on initiative of all the Norwegian banks. As of 2024, the market share of BankAxept stood at ** percent.
