Changes in emergency department visits because of health issues due to substance consumption during the outbreak of COVID-19 differed depending on the substance type. There was a decrease of ** percent in the number of people visiting the emergency department after consuming alcohol and an increase of * percent related to the consumption of other substances, such as opioids and cannabis. This graph shows the percentage change of people who visited the emergency department in Canada because of substance consumption, in the period from March to September 2019 and March to September 2020, by substance type.
